Well, previously the networking lab that I am running was using Windows (XP, then Vista) and provided an AD environment in a domain. After looking at the memory and disk consumptions of Windows Vista and 7, I decided to completely redo the lab’s architecture to be solely based on Linux. The main reason for this was the available/used amount of RAM that the machines had after the OS was up and running…while Windows used approximately 700MB/2GB of RAM, different Linux flavours used only half (and that was with the full-blown GUI).
As I am using virtualization in the lab for various networking courses, the more available RAM, the better. So, in turn I set up Fedora Core 11 on the desktops and am using Debian stable for the 2 servers. Let’s see what the semester brings….
